How to view and manipulate Medical Computer Aided Design models

In 3Dicom R&D, you have the ability to view and manipulate CAD Models

On the MCAD (mechanical computer-aided design) Tab, there are a couple of tools that you can use:

CAD Models

ActionIconDescription
Import Models Import CAD Models IconBy clicking on the import CAD Model icon, you will will have the option to import from the model library or directly from your computer.

Import CAD Models Options

Model Library
– You can import from model library, CAD models that you have imported in 3Dicom.

Browse Files
– Open CAD Models from your computer.
Delete CAD ModelDelete selected CAD ModelsSelect one or more (Hold Shift and left-click on a model in the CAD Models list) models and click on the Delete CAD Model Icon to delete the selected models.
Boolean OperationsSelect multiple (Hold Shift and left-click on a model in the CAD Models list) models and click on the Boolean Operations Icon to merge the selected models.



Merge – Merges the selected models and creates a new one.
Intersect – Creates a new models based on the intersecting sections of the selected models.
Subtract – Creates a new model based on the selected segments. The first model selected will subtract from the second selected model.
Group selected CAD ModelsGroup CAD ModelsSelect multiple (Hold Shift and left-click on a model in the CAD Models list) models and click on the Group CAD Models Icon to group the selected models.
Create Copies of selected CAD ModelsCreate Copies of CAD ModelsSelect one or more (Hold Shift and left-click on a model in the CAD Models list) models and click on the Create Copy Models Icon to create copies of the selected CAD Models.
Undo ActionUndo action in MCADYou can undo actions by clicking the Undo Button. You can also use the hotkey Ctrl + Z
Redo ActionRedo action in MCADYou can undo actions by clicking the Redo Button. You can also use the hotkey Ctrl + Y
Hide scan/CAD ModelHide scan-modelWhen you create segments, you can hide them in the view by clicking on the Hide Scan/Segment Icon.
Adjust opacity of scan/CAD ModelOpacity Range scan - modelWhen you have segments, you can adjust the opacity of the scan when you view it. The opacity range is from 0 to 100, where 0 is transparent or hidden and 100 is not transparent at all.

Options per MCAD:

Change Colour – Allows you to change the selected MCAD Model colour as well as Specular and Smoothness.
Specular Slider – adjusts the bright highlights that one would see on a glossy surface of an MCAD Model
Smoothness Slider – adjusts the smoothness across the MCAD Models’ surface.



Toggle Visibility – Allows you hide the selected MCAD Model
Rename – Allows you to rename the selected MCAD Model. You can also double-click the selected MCAD Models name to rename it.
Clone – Creates a duplicate of the selected MCAD Model.
Copy to Segment – Creates a segment from an MCAD Model.
Export – Exports selected MCAD Model
Delete – Deletes selected MCAD Model(s)

Toggle Options

ActionDescription
Show Selected OnlyOnly selected CAD Models will be shown in the 3D View.
Lock ZoomingZooming in and out (Mouse Scroll Wheel) will be locked/disabled.
Show in 2D ViewsMakes models visible in 2D Views

Background Change

You can toggle background colours to visualise the can and CAD Models better. This is only applicable to the 3D View.

Colours Currently Available:

Black (Default)

Gradient

Grey

White

Transform Tools

In Transform Tools, this is where you can manipulate the models. You can move the location, rotate and scale the model selected.

ActionDescription
Local / Global Movement ToggleLocal
– When the toggle is on Local, the movement is referenced to its parent.
Global
– When the toggle is on Local, the movement is referenced to the scan.
Lock AllWhen this is enabled, it will lock any changes to the transform tools, particularly the Location, Rotation and Scale Tools. Lock icons are also in each transform tool.
LocationThe Location Transform Tool is in reference to X, Y and Z plane movement.

Relocates selected objects along an axis or plane.

The X, Y and Z can also be locked individually.
RotationThe Rotation Transform Tool is in reference to X, Y and Z plane movement.

Rotates selected objects about a specified axis.

The X, Y and Z can also be locked individually.
ScaleThe Scale Transform Tool is in reference to X, Y and Z plane movement.

Scales selected objects along a specified plane or axis, or uniformly along all 3 axes.

The X, Y and Z can also be locked individually.
ResetWhen you click this icon, it will reset all transform changes.

Relocates selected objects along an axis or plane.

Movement based on axis:
X – Red Arrow
Y – Green Arrow
Z – Blue Arrow

Movement based on plane:
X – Red Square
Y – Green Square
Z – Blue Square
RotationThe Rotation Transform Tool is in reference to X, Y and Z plane movement.

Rotates selected objects about a specified axis.

X – Red Axis Handle
Y – Green Axis Handle
Z – Blue Axis Handle
ScaleThe Scale Transform Tool is in reference to X, Y and Z plane movement.

Scales selected objects along a specified plane or axis, or uniformly along all 3 axes.

X – Red Cube
Y – Green Cube
Z – Blue Cube

White Center Cube scales the whole model.

Export Models

ActionIconDescription
Add to Model LibraryWhen this is toggled, any selected models will be added to Model Library when the Export Model(s) Button is clicked.
Export Model(s)



When you click this button, a pop-up window will show up. You will locate where you want to export the model you selected. The model will be exported as an .STL file type.
