R&D has moved online

3DICOM R&D is now entirely cloud-based
As of September 1, 2025, 3DICOM R&D has officially transitioned to a fully cloud-based platform — and has been rebranded as 3DICOM EDU to reflect our continued focus on medical education and research. This marks a significant upgrade in how users access, view, and share their medical scans.
With 3DICOM EDU now entirely online, there’s no longer any need to install software on your computer — simply log in and start exploring scans from your web browser.
No more downloads or installations
If you’ve used the 3DICOM R&D desktop application in the past, you may be familiar with needing to install updates or manage local storage. That’s no longer necessary.
You can now:
- Open your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.)
- Go to my.3dicomviewer.com
- Log in to your account.
- Instantly access and view your medical images in 2D and 3D.
All from any device — no installations, drivers, or updates required.
The benefits of going cloud-based
The cloud-based 3DICOM ecosystem brings all the power of our desktop viewer to the web — with even more flexibility and features:
| Feature | Benefit |
|---|---|
| 🌐 Access Anywhere | View your scans on any internet-connected device. |
| 🔒 Secure Cloud Storage | Your DICOM files are safely stored and backed up. |
| 📤 Easy Upload & Sharing | Upload scans directly from your device and securely share them via email. |
| 🧠 AI Integration | Access advanced tools via the built-in AI Model Marketplace. |
| 👩⚕️ No Technical Barriers | Ideal for patients, professionals, and educators alike — no setup required. |
Feature changes
To deliver the speed, simplicity, and accessibility of the new online platform, some advanced features from the legacy desktop version are not currently available in the cloud-based version of 3DICOM EDU.
Key changes:
- Collaboration tools (e.g., multi-user sessions with voice or annotation) are not yet supported in the online version.
- MCAD tools (used for high-precision measurements and prototyping workflows) are not yet supported in the online version.
While these features are being evaluated for future cloud compatibility, the current version focuses on the most widely used tools for:
- Medical image viewing (2D & 3D)
- Secure Sharing
- Scan storage and management
- AI model access
What happens to the old 3DICOM R&D desktop application?
The desktop version for R&D is now officially deprecated and unsupported. If you’ve previously downloaded 3DICOM Desktop for R&D, we recommend:
- Switching to the cloud-based platform (now called 3DCIOM EDU) for the latest tools and features.
- Deleting any old installation files.
- Moving your scans to the cloud for secure, long-term storage.
