What exactly is patient education?

“The process of influencing patient behavior and producing the changes in knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to maintain or improve health.”

American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP)

Over the past few decades, the healthcare industry has constantly evolved and made significant ground to introduce more patient-centric practices and procedures. This has been especially evident through the efforts made to enhance patient education.

In the modern value-based healthcare system, an increased number of physicians and healthcare facilities are promoting patient education as one of their top priorities.  And yet, research tells us that on average, patients ask 0 – 2 questions to their doctors during a standard consultation.

Physicians today are expected to educate and engage their patients, improving their health literacy i.e., their learning, understanding, and application of knowledge or health information received. But it is also a fact that over 50% of the patients walk out of a consultation with no idea how to follow through with the information they have just been bombarded with. And that is largely due to the difference in the level of knowledge of a physician and a common person. Consequently, studies have found that there is a 19% higher risk of non-adherence to the doctor’s advice by patients who thought their physicians were unable to communicate at their intellect level.

In 2021, CMS penalized 2545 hospitals for readmitting Medicare patients within a month of being discharged. This is exactly why improved patient education needs our attention more than ever before.

The lack of patient education also results in burnout for physicians. 42% of the doctors, experience burnout, low energy, depression, and other such conditions at some point in their career. This is another reason why patient education is the need of the hour.

Benefits of educating and engaging with patients

In a value-based care system such as the one we have today, patient education is by far one of the leading priorities as it helps improve everything such as:

  • Illness Prevention
  • Homecare
  • Reimbursement of medical bills

And most importantly,

  • Much better health outcomes for the patients themselves

But as has been mentioned, the trouble with patient education is NOT the intent or the channels through which physicians try educating and engaging with their patients, but the level of technical information that may sometimes become impossible to be interpreted by a person with a basic level of education and an average mental capacity.

Understanding medical imaging, scan reports, and more

The difference in understanding is more evident when a patient sees their medical reports or 2D medical imaging such as PET scans or MRI reports. To most of them, even a basic ultrasound report is incomprehensible with all those images and scribbles underneath.

Technology to the rescue

For all these above-mentioned reasons, physicians need the help of technology – like 3Dicom software – to create a better picture for their patients. And the patients can also benefit from a more understandable, interactive, and clearer picture of the 2D medical images that looked alien to them in the first place.

The limited duration of the consultation is also a constraint where patients are too worried or anxious to ask too many questions and most of the time, leave the office with a prescription in hand and not even retain half of the what physician said.

As a patient when you are able to fathom the medical illustrations that seemed like a jumble at first, is half the job done. As a physician, it’s a welcome resource to let your patients see it the way they can discern it better.

This is why technology – i.e., our 3Dicom viewer – can be a real, lifesaver.

Effective Patient Education with 3Dicom Viewer

Looking helplessly at the reel of your scans or unfathomable images handed over by the physician, you may sometimes wonder what that really signifies. You put your head to it, do your best to understand the jargon scribbled over it, and really wish you could see where the left lobe tapered or the certain accumulation or a projection was; but to no avail.

That’s because the scan images are like the technical drawings of your internal organs in 2-dimensional planes which physicians know about because they have spent a lifetime studying those, but they’re not intended to be understood by a non-medical person.

This is where you need a tool like 3Dicom viewer, which converts standard 2D medical images to 3D immersive models and really helps with improving patient education outcomes.

Conceptual Image for 2D Measurement Tool

Creates fully immersive 3D models from CT, MRI, and other scans

The technology allows for far better results than its compatriots as it purposefully creates High Definition, detailed 3D visualizations from the scan reports in 2D and not gives it as an add-on to any report.

Density Slider Feature

Provides an excellent, clear view of internal anatomy through the density slider view, where the viewer can remove parts like skin and other cells for better viewing of the anatomy.

For a full list of features, please visit the product page.

Rotate, Pan, Zoom, and Slice function

There is a fluent Zoom function to get an immersive detailed view of internal anatomy. But you can also adjust the view of the 3D model of your internal anatomy, with a rotation function, looking at it from every angle. There is a pan feature and slow rotation usable for physicians and patients alike.
