FAQs
Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions around sharing scans in 3DICOM below.
Sharing allows you to securely send others an electronic copy of your medical DICOM scans and imaging. This could be a doctor, patient, colleague, or friend. They can open and view the copy on their own device without you needing to burn a disc or carry physical records.
A series is a group of medical images that were captured during the same scan using the same imaging settings. For example, when you have a CT or MRI scan, the scanner creates many individual image ‘slices.’ These slices are grouped together into a series.
A single scan (also called a study) may contain multiple series — for instance:
- One series showing images of your chest,
- Another showing your abdomen,
- Or different series with contrast vs. without contrast.
In 3DICOM, the Series contains the actual image files you can view, share, or run AI models on.
You can share scans with anyone who has an email address. If the recipient already has a 3DICOM account, the scan will appear automatically in their dashboard, and they will be notified of the event (via email and on thier account). If the recipient doesn’t have an account, they’ll receive an email prompting them to create one to access the shared scan.
At present, once a scan has been shared, there is no way to revoke access. For this reason, it’s important to carefully double-check the recipient’s email address before sharing. To help avoid mistakes, you’ll be prompted to add email addresses to a recipient list before sending. This extra step is designed to give you a chance to verify the details and reduce the possibility of errors.
Yes. You should only share medical scans if you have the right to do so (e.g., they are your own scans, they are anonymized for educational purposes, or you have patient consent). You will be asked to confirm this during the sharing process.
Yes. You can enter multiple email addresses when prompted, and each recipient will receive access to the shared scan.
Absolutely. Shared scans are protected and can only be accessed by the people you specify. Recipients will need to log into their 3DICOM account to view the files, and 3DICOM’s HIPAA-compliant Medical File Transfer Protocol is used to keep all data secure while in transit.
Additionally, when you share a scan, the recipient is only granted access to a copy of your scan through their verified account. And the shared copy is view-only, meaning it cannot be downloaded or re-shared by the recipient.
If the recipient doesn’t have an account, they’ll receive an email inviting them to create one. Once they’ve registered, the shared scan will automatically appear in their account.
No, not at present. Currently sharing works by sending a copy of your scan to the intended recipient. Since this copy is not linked to your original scan, there is presently no way to remove access to it.
No. Recipients technically receive a copy of the scan you’ve shared with them. They cannot edit, overwrite, or delete the original file in your account.
With 3DICOM’s sharing capabilities, providing access to medical scans is simple, fast, and secure. In just a few steps, you can give your doctor, colleagues, patients, or students the access they need — without the delays or limitations of physical media.
