How to Navigate Scans Using Touch Gestures
Understanding Touch Controls in 3DICOM Mobile
The 3DICOM Mobile App uses simple, familiar touch gestures so you can explore your medical scans in both 2D and 3D views. These gestures let you move, rotate, and zoom into your scans for a closer look at important details.
To learn more about the different views you can navigate with these gestures, see our general help guide Understanding 2D & 3D Views.
2D View Gestures
Scroll Through Slices
Swipe up or down with one finger to move between 2D image slices along the selected anatomical plane.
Pan (Move the Image)
Drag two fingers together across the screen to reposition the scan on the screen without rotating or zooming.
Zoom In/Out
Pinch two fingers together to zoom out; spread them apart to zoom in to enlarge or reduce the view of the scan.
3D View Gestures
Free Rotation
Drag one finger across the screen in any direction to rotate the 3D model freely, following the path of your finger, so you can view the scan from any angle.
Pan (Move the Model)
Drag two fingers together across the screen to reposition the 3D model on the screen without rotating or zooming.
Zoom In/Out
Pinch two fingers together to zoom out; spread them apart to zoom in, to enlarge or reduce the 3D model view.
FAQs & Troubleshooting
Find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about using touch gestures on 3DICOM Mobile below.
In 2D view, one finger is used to scroll through slices or rotate (if enabled). To avoid accidental movements, repositioning the scan requires a two-finger drag gesture.
Yes. In 2D view, gestures let you scroll through slices, zoom, and pan the flat image. In 3D view, gestures provide more freedom: you can rotate the model in any direction with one finger, zoom in or out with two fingers, and pan across the screen with a two-finger drag.
Rotate (one finger): Dragging one finger across the screen rotates the 3D model in the direction of your finger movement, letting you view it from any angle.
Pan (two fingers): Dragging two fingers together moves the entire 3D model’s position on the screen without changing its orientation.
Yes. For example, you can rotate the model in 3D view, then pinch to zoom in for a closer look, and pan to re-center it. Combining gestures gives you full control over how you explore the scan. Some gestures, such as Pan and Zoom, can even be used simultaneously, enabling you to maneuver more efficiently in the app.
Yes. All standard touch gestures work the same way on both platforms in the 3DICOM Mobile App.
If the scan is moved too far or zoomed too far in or out, it might appear ‘lost’.
If the scan is moved too far or zoomed too far in or out, try the following:
- Adjust the zoom with two fingers — spread them apart to zoom in if the scan has been made too small, or pinch them together to zoom out if it was over-enlarged.
- Pan with two fingers to reposition the scan on the screen.
Mastering these touch gestures makes it easy to navigate your scans in both 2D and 3D views. Whether you’re zooming in for detail, rotating a 3D model, or scrolling through slices, these simple actions give you full control over how you explore your medical data. With a little practice, you’ll be moving through scans quickly and confidently.
